What’s GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer systems and software used to support collection, assembly, analysis, and presentation of spatial information. GIS includes systems for computer-aided cartography, the art and science of preparation of maps — flat graphic representations of the surface of the Earth, or other planets — but also much more. GIS is now an important part of Internet webserver technology, especially when coupled with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to support Location Based Services (LBS). For more details, see:
