GIS at UML Wiki

This is a "wiki" website supporting GIS activities at UMass-Lowell, developed by Alex Brown at the UML-EEAS GIS Lab. (Contact information below.) It is intended to support collaboration among all UML faculty and students who teach, study and use GIS resources.

A wiki is a website that allows users to add, remove, edit and change content, typically without the need for registration. It also allows for linking among any number of pages. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaboration. This Wiki uses MediaWiki, a free software wiki package originally written for Wikipedia. It is now used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis.

This wiki is always under construction -- occasional inconsistencies are unavoidable! But please contact the developer to report any problems.

The logo at the upper left of each page is a folded Dymaxion map projection globe. It was created by Buckminster Fuller, and patented by him in 1946. (The name Dymaxion (tm} was applied by Fuller to several of his inventions.) The Dymaxion projection, unlike most other map projections, is intended purely for representations of the entire globe. When unfolded as a two dimensional map, it retains most of the relative proportional integrity of the globe. It is often illustrated in animations such as this one:
