Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer systems and software used to support collection, assembly, analysis, and presentation of spatial information. GIS includes systems for computer-aided cartography, the art and science of preparation of maps -- flat graphic representations of the surface of the Earth, or other planets -- but also much more. GIS is now an important part of Internet webserver technology, especially when coupled with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to support Location Based Services (LBS). For more details, see:

GIS at UMass-Lowell
GIS is an applied technical subject dealing with recent and emerging technology for management and manipulation of spatial information, especially for decision support and planning. It is one of the most interdisciplinary areas of computer technology, with applications in many fields. GIS is practiced and taught here at several levels in several programs:
- College of Arts and Sciences
- Science and Mathematics
- Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
- Environmental Studies
- Geoscience
- Atmospheric Science
- UML Meteorology Lab
- Center for Atmospheric Research
- Toxics Use Reduction Institute
- Center for Complex Environmental Systems

This website
This "Wiki" website provides a way for UMass-Lowell users, teachers, and students of GIS to collaborate and share information about their activities and resources, and to invite participation of others, especially new students. (A Wiki is a software system for easy collaboration in writing and illustrating web pages.) While the resources described and linked here are intended to support academic programs and curriculum, our intent is to also support discussion of community, regional, and international service projects using GIS, for possible incorporation in curriculum and research.
There has been a rash of "Wiki spammer" attacks on campus lately - and as a result we're shutting off open registration. To have a new account created, please send email to gis@uml.edu -- thanks!
